Does anyone have experience with the Smith comp below?  This comp doesn't seem to get the attention that a FSC556 does but I am curious if anyone has experience with its performance.

Yes.  I have 2 of them, one on my M14S and another on an AR in .223.  The performance of this brake on the .308 is absolutely amazing.  The traditional muzzle climb of the M14 is almost gone and the felt recoil is significantly reduced.  On the AR there is next to no muzzle climb and some reduction in felt recoil although the AR has little anyway.  Overall, I think it's a good brake though a bit pricey.

Here's the unit on my M14.

Works great for muzzle flip but directs too much concussive force back at the shooter.  Gives me a headache.  Gives a friend of mine a headache, too.

True for a 30cal @ $135 but for 5.56mm it's only $45, not too bad. That said, I'll stick with my FSC556 for double the cost.
