How can I tell if my EA ar15 shoots 223 or .566?

Check barrel stamp, it will either say .223 or 5.56

If it is a .223 wylde chamber which it will say u can use 5.56

Look on the receiver and look between the handguard and the end of the barrel.  Most will have the twist rate and caliber stamped there. The barrel (chamber) will determine what it will shoot.

Usually If I can get it in.  I'll go ahead and shoot!

Your barrel will be marked 5.56. You can shoot 5.56 military or .223 Remington in it. If the barrel were marked .223 Remington, you could not shoot 5.56 military in it.

It can be done, but you will be exceeding SAAMI specs for the chamber. Not quite inviting disaster, but certainly not good policy.

What does it say on the left side of the lower receiver?

Then remove handguards and look at the barrel, might tell you more.

Some one tell me if I'm wrong, but Essential Arms don't sell complete rifles. They sell everything but the barrel.

That said, some one had to put it together with an after market barrel. So you best bet is to look on the barrel. If it's not on there, I would check with the person you bought the rifle from. I wouldn't trust what stamped on the Lower receiver.

EA does not make complete rifles, he probably has no idea who put it together.

What's marked on the lower is meaningless.  It has NOTHING to do with what the barrel is chambered for.  Most Colt Sporters are marked ".223" on the receivers, but I don't think any Colt is made with a SAMMI chamber.

Many barrel makers/OEMs mark the chambering and twist rate of their barrels on top of the barrel forward of the FSB.  Rock River uses a code that they put on top of the barrel just forward of the barrel nut (which makes it a pain to find and a pain to interpret).  Check the barrel for these marks, and if they're absent, then check with whoever made the complete upper.
