Hey guys, I just picked up my first AR this past weekend.  It is an M&P 15 OR.  I have read of the price issues, but it was the only one I could find and my buddy is the store manager so I got his discount.  I got an EOtech sight for it. Now I am just waiting to get a free float quad rail, vertical grip, BUIS, and whatever else I can get without causing a divorce.  I have a question:  I really want the Larue Tactical free float handguard.  I have watched videos on you tube and it looks pretty easy to do, but would it be cheaper to pay a gunsmith to do a 30 min job or buy the tools and try it myself.  I am really nervous about  messing with the gas tube.  Thanks and I look forward to learning more about my new black

I wouldn't worry about messing with the gas tube.

If you're not planning on working on your AR anymore, it'd be cheaper to buy the Larue rail and pay a smith to install it.  But if you think you might work on it again, or may ever buy another AR pattern rifle, it might be worth your trouble to get the tools.

if youre not planning on the knowing all the intricities involved with your rifle, then get a smith to do it...if you want to know how to fix potential problems take the time to have a friend with the right tools teach you how its done.

On that upper it would be piece of cakke so do it yourself. No taper pins on the gas block. They can be the devil to get off a standard FSB.

Nice rifle and good choice with the EO.

If you take it to a shop, it'll be around $40.  If you buy the tools- if you can find some of them, right now its nuts trying to find anything - you'll spend a little over a $100.

Second on the if you don't plan on working on more than one, have the smith do it.

There's nothing hard about the installation of rails, but the tools can make it not worth it for one job.

Fair warning, if you buy the tools, they talk to you at night and convince you to get more ARs to work on.

nice rifel, and welcome to the ar clan.  Where did you purchase the rifle?  I also live in Indiana and can give you some pointers on where I have been able to find parts around indy.  good luck, now you have the b.r.d.!

Why not save the trouble, time and expense and go with a good two piece drop-in rail?
