So I have decided to start my first build. Ive wanted to do this for a few years now but im going to go ahead and start it for a couple different reasons. Honestly I am a rifle beginner. Ive owned two hand guns and sold both of them due to certain reasons.

I have been reading day and night about ARs and what I want. The problem is I am the most indecisive person in the world. I would spend a year picking out what lower I want. Ok maybe not a year but to long for sure. As for lowers, is one brand better then the other? Ive been a fan of the Spike lower for a while now. I really just want a reliable and cheaper rifle to start with. But I don't want to pick up the cheapest thing and not be able to upgrade later down the road.

The upper is a whole other decision I haven't even start to decide on. There are so many differences, Carbine, A2, A3, M4, Flat-top, etc. I have decided I want to shoot 5.56 because its cheap. The reason I want to build one is for basic target shooting and because I miss having a firearm :( This is a project that my friend and I are doing together. He is building one and so am I.

Barrel size is also a big decision. I doubt I will be shooting over 200yrd anytime soon. I think I want a 16" but I was reading a thread about what is the best barrel size and some say 14" and some some 20".

Basically I'm just looking for a push in the right direction and some info so I don't make a mistake someone else has.

Thanks!

Sean

Spike's lowers are good to go.

As far as barrel length, 16" is the shortest you can go without (a) getting a tax stamp, or (b) permanently attaching a muzzle device.

16" is the way to go if you don't want to deal with the above hassles that I mentioned.

The spikes lowers are good from what i hear i want to pick one up soon for myself.
I have a 16" 1/9 twist stag complete upper that i got from legal transfers (thanks Pete) and i love it.
It sits on a essential arms lower with a RRA lpk kit. I put it together with my pops and his friend from church.
It was my first build and i love it so far. I have been upgrading and buying parts for it eversince.
I would reccomend the Magpul CTR stock and MIAD grip kit. They are awesome.

Good luck with your build and IM me with any questions.

Good Day,

Sweet. Seems like in headed in the right direction. I really like the Magpul CTR stock and have had my eye on it. Want to get the lower first tho. :)

I would be the one influencing him to finally start building : ), all because I have recently decided to start my first build after shooting my first AR.  So why not at the same time?  I decided to start off with the spikes lower as well, with a stag LPK and either CAA 6 pos. or RRA stock.

The upper is throwing me for a loop though.  I don't know whether to buy complete or piece it together.  I know I want to stick with a 16" barrel for sure, for what I will be shooting it will be perfect.
