So I was a Cabellas today and I noticed a older looking Colt AR in the glass case with the pistols.  It had the really old collapsible style stock and no m-4 cut in the barrel.  What caught my eye was that the selector switch was in the rear position.  I have never seen one that goes the whole way back w/o it being an auto AR.  The lower was stamped "Colt AR-15" and I was able to get it out of the case and move the selector.  It did indeed flip through all 3 positions.  Also only the top position was marked "Fire", it was missing the "Safe" stamp and had no markings at the rear position.  Anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks,

Jeremiah

Did you open it up to look for a sear?

I have seen a few class 3 at Cabela's in the gun library.  You can also tell by the price.  They had a full auto SP1 for $16000!  It was not even a nice example.

Someone may have, at one time, set it up for a sear and left the selector switch in it...ILLEGAL!

No, I did not open the gun.  Cabellas was REALLY busy and the guy behind the counter was probably not gonna take kindly to me opening up the gun on the counter, so I didn't bother.  I know that it was not a class III because the price was $1,700, therefore I seriously doubt that it is a auto gun.

The FA selector is legal, as long as it doesn't make it go FA........  (but it's a bad idea)

I don't know why it would be, but maybe the rifle had a full-auto FCG modified to semi-auto only.  The sear catch on the hammer and disconnect tail would be hacked off.

If the cam in the auto position has been milled off, it isn't an auto selector switch anymore. It is a safe-semi-semi selector switch. If you ordered a FCG back in the day, you may have gotten a de-milled M-16 FCG. It is legal, as long as it was modified per the spec in ATF P 5300.4.
