Hello All -

I've decided to build a clone of the Army's DMR, and I had a couple of questions that I'd like some advice/feedback on.

I recently purchased a CMMG 20" Gov't Profile Upper for this build, but it is back ordered for almost a year. Because of this I decided to look into other options seeing as how I have plenty of time to cancel the order if need be. I was reading that the DMR uses a 1:8 twist barrel that is fluted and has a front sight that is attached via set screws instead of taper pins. My first question would be, aside from authenticty, how worth it would it be to look at getting a match grade barrel instead of the 1:7 barrel I would get with the CMMG?

I noticed that White Oak Armament makes a DM-R replica barrel that has the flutes cut and front sight installed via set screws. It looks like a pretty good option to consider, however it comes from them in a stainless finish and I'd really like something "blackish" to keep the color of the rifle roughly uniform. So I suppose my next question would be, do you have any suggestions for other barrel MFG's that make something similiar to what WOA offers but in a "black" finish? If not, what are my options for having the WOA barrel refinished to look that way?

Lastly, I know this should probably go in the optics section of the forums but as I'm posting here I figured I'd ask, do you all have any suggestions for an ACOG. I was looking at the TA31RCO-A4, but didn't know if there would be a better reticle/ACOG option given that this will be a DMR and not a CQB rifle.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I made a DMR using the Douglas barrel the Army uses. Compass Lake Engineering furnished the barrel and fluted it under the handguards. They can get it to within about a month. You can send it to ADCO to be KG coated

I had one made at ADCO in 2005 using the same barrel and coating that JCrowl mentioned....

Hey Guys -

Thank you so much for your input! Those are some sweet looking rifles by the way...I can't wait.

I did have a couple of questions about ordering from Compass Lake Engineering. I'm pretty new to anything like this so thank you for your patience.

Should I just give them a call and tell them what I want? If I reference the stainless steel barrel that is standard on the DMR will they know what I'm talking about? Fluting, Set Screw Front sight? Etc...? If not, is there something specific I should ask for?

Next, would it make sense to send CLE an upper with the DD FF tube to install the components? If so, can ADCO do the KG Kote after the barrel has been installed?

Thank you so much for your help!

Compass Lake will know exactly what your talking about. get the barrel and then and have Adco assemble it after they kote the barrel, otherwise you or adco would have to tear the gun apart to kote the barrel.

This. Make sure you ask CLE for the 12 flutes under the handguard, they will know what you mean for sure. CLE assembled mine for me with the components I sent them, but since you want it coated, I would suggest as the above poster said, Get the barrel then send it with your upper components for assembly to ADCO. You can buy the DD rails from them as well and have them assembled. In fact, I'm gonna send my SDM-R upper to ADCO for the cote job.

My WOA DMR barrel will be here tomorrow.  I will be sending it to Springer Precision in Oregon on Friday for Ion Bonding.  Springer quoted me $60 for treating a stripped barrel.

What did that barrel from CLE run you? I have a lower to build and an thinking of doing a SDM-R type build. Optic question, but is there any advantage/disadvantage of using a 1-4x scope as opposed to the 4x ACOG? I've read some stuff that the 1-4x works out better at close range CQB stuff. Going with a 1x optic, is there any problem with the FSB being in the way? My other AR is a Colt 20" A2. Thought I was going to build a middy, but keep being pulled back to the A2 stock 20" config. Would be great to rig one with a nice optic and barrel and really tear it up at the range.

ETA: Any suggestions for a bolt to use with this barrel? I'm guessing one ould get better results using a WOA bolt or something similar than using a Stag or something like that.

I recall I paid about $350 for both the barrel and the fluting job in 2007, I f I recall I'm using a CMT bcg in it. I don't think the bolt has that mich effect on accuracy. CLE is pretty reasonable. My new Douglas 18" SPR barrel with M4 feed ramp extension was $315 shipped/

Looks like WOA will run about $370 for theirs with the F marked 4 set screw FSB adding another $45. Do the CLE have the FSB mounted using set screws or taper pins? Getting back to the color question, does the .mil run the barrels s/s finish or do they coat them?

Yes, CLE supplied the set screw front sight base. The pics of Army SDM-Rs show them to be coated I believe. The USMC uses a type of bluing process on their equivalent, the SAM-R but it wears off easily and a lot of the pics of them show what looks to be the stainless barrel.

One more question for you all...

Did you have CLE thread the barrel for the A2 flash suppressor, or was that done at ADCO?

[#13]
cle will thread the barrel if you request it.

Yep, mine came with the threads and barrel extension I requested (m4 feed ramps)

Perfect...thank you for the information guys! Time to get started on the build!

Can anyone grab a weight of the DMR setup?  Without optic/mag.

I'm trying to figure out how much weight is removed by the fluting.  thanks.

I had one more question regarding optics on the Army DMR.

I'm leaning towards going with the TA31DOC ACOG. Anyone use this on their rifle? If so, what are your thoughts?

Thanks

Barrel weighs 2 lb. 9 oz. after fluting.  Close to 14 oz. weight reduction.  You also get a 81% surface area increase for the legth of barrel that is fluted to aid in cooling.

I originally had a TA31F mounted on mine but found I could still see the front sight through the ACOG and found it distracting. I also wanted more magnification on a longer range rifle so I got a Burris Fullfield II LRS basllisiplex (lighted reticle scope), and had Burris install the target turret and put it in a Larue SPR mount. It works great for me

I run an TA01NSN ACOG, and MATECH BUIS, since I built mine based on the picture below...
