Which one is better? 4 prong vortex or 5 slot A2 birdcage?

Vortex is better at suppressing flash, but I do not like the looks of them at all. They also make a kind of ping sound, like a tuning fork when you shoot. I personally like the A2 best of all, the phantom style would be my next choice. In the end its a matter of opinion you can't go wrong w/ either...

Better at what?

Vortex is superior at hiding flash.

The A2 is less expensive and looks more military-ish

There may be additional pros/cons, but if you're going after pure function... go Vortex, no question!

others have accurately related the performance of the two, but the AAC Blackout is a superior option to them both in terms of flash supression. It is second only to a can in flash supression.

I've never seen any flash hider that did not work well. If you don't believe me go shoot a standard Mini-14 (no muzzle device) at dusk then follow up with any hider you want. They all work great. All they do is seperate the expanding gasses in different directions so they can't continue to burn. Knowing that, it all comes down to personal preference. I like the Vortex looks, but the tuning fork effect is a little annoying.

Actually most cans are worse than flash suppressors, especially on the first shot.  Even AAC cans mounted ON a blackout will have more flash than the blackout alone.  There's something about the environment inside a silencer that makes flash suppression difficult.

No kidding.  I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of hardly any flash the first time I did a night shoot with my LMT w/ a standard A2 FH.  its almost non-existant.  Conversely, my glock was lighting up the world.....  big diff.

You should try a .45 Commander or New Agent (Officer's ACP) after dark with +P ammo!  There's so much unburnt powder...  yeah, sorry, I got off topic.

I have an FN FAL and it's flashider is like a very long A2 style.  Works well even with 7.62.  I agree, Vortex is quite good but to me, I see snag potential with open ended prongs.  There's a number of good designs for both flash suppression and to reduce muzzle climb.  Pick one with features or appearance you like and try it.  Dare to be different.  You ever see the flash hider on the old SMLE "jungle carbine"??

Wasn't there a thread somewhere that had comparative photos of the effectiveness of various flash suppressors?

I saw a video once of night fire with m-193 with an A2 vs a Vortex the difference was amazing. The vortex had like 1/4 the flash that the A2 had. That said it depends on if you think you will ever get your $60.00 worth of flash supression for the shooting that you do. Might be able to find it on youtube or something.

Phantom 5C2 works as well as the Vortex, closed end, looks cool, less than $25.
