Heard it mentioned at a shop I was in the other day. What is it?

I've heard of them, even considering buying a complete upper w/ magazine, mostly because: IT'S FREAKIN' IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ANYTHING ELSE!

Check the FN subforum in the Armory section, a few people in there have/post about them.

I've thought about getting one but it's just another caliber to keep mags/ammo/etc for and other than being able to go through Kevlar there's no real advantage over .223

They eject through the lower down through the mag holder. i was wondering if this would have any negative effects such as heavy powder residue buildup inside that would be noticeable when switched back to a regular upper

Dead sexy, although I'd prefer black MBUS instead of tan

The only reason I'd get one is if I had the FN pistol that shoots that round.

I'll stick to 223 and 50 Beowulf

That would be the main reason for me as well, I like to consolidate calibers.

From what I gather, including checking out factory empties that P90 shooters have left behind, the 5.7X28 is a pretty clean burning cartridge.  I would not worry much about getting the lower dirty from having the upper eject downward.

Where does someone get a short-barreled version of this upper?  All I've seen advertised were 16" versions.

Oh, and "great pictures" as usual!

I have one of these on a pistol lower, the only drawback is the ammo is not  available in surplus like 5.56, that aside this thing is great, very reliable, very simple, blowback operation and stays clean and operational, I cut the bottom of a 20 round mag and attached a nylon pouch for a brass catcher. if you have some extra funds for it I do not think you would be disapointed. take a look at their website for details and pics.

one more thing, the magazines are expensive and have to be purchased from another place at this time, but two mags at 50 reliable rounds each give you a lot of firepower.

Okay –– I've heard this more than once, and it doesn't pass the smell test to me.  What exactly makes the 5.7 go through Kevlar where a .223 won't?  From my understanding, .223 will punch right through just about any vest without plates –– is that not correct?  And if so, is the "advantage" of the 5.7 that it's kind of a cross between a rifle and a pistol cartridge and can be shot from a smaller handgun?

The 5.7 military bullet is supposed to go through body armor at short ranges because it actually has a hardened penetrator tip.  .223 and 5.56mm ammunition (available to us) does not.  That tip displaces the Kevlar fibers instead of deforming the way a typical FMJ does, so it can penetrate a vest.

As far as the caliber goes there is no advantage, except less blast from a short barrel, the advantage is it is a fast shooting reliable system that has been adapted to the AR lower platform, except for the fact that the balistic performance is not as good, the overall system is an improvement. However, you would not have trouble killing the avarage gang banger, and as as far as military is concerned, a shot off with an ar57 is a better shot than a shot jammed with a 5.56.
