sounds like a carbine length (does it have the notch in the barrel for the grenade launcher?) it would take 7" rails. You can get a good set of Knight's Armament rails on the Equipment Exchange, Ebay or Gunbroker for about $200.

I think it would probably also depend on whether or not he had a FSB (A frame) or a low pro gas block...

ETA:  If youre going to get a new handguard, my 3 favs are KAC, LaRue and DD...cant go wrong with any.

Thanks Guys!! Out of town town at the moment will have to look for notch but I think the rifle is a A frame. What are your thoughts on Daniel defense Omega rails? This is my first rifle and their ad says no gunsmithing required and no mods to weapon which would be great since I have two left thumbs.

Hey one other question?  How often do you need to clean the gas tube with the pipe cleaner deals. I have shot about 50 rounds so far. I clean the weapon every time after shooting but I have no idea about the gas tube???

You do not need to clean the gas tube.

Ok are you serious? Why are the pipe cleaner things offered?

So you can get them stuck in your gas tube.
That way people that sold you the pipe cleaners can sell you another gas tube.

You don't need to clean the gas tube...

I've had knights armament rails and hated them.  I ended up using UTG mid length 8" rails and love them.  The cost about a third of what the Knights Armament ones do and work about twice as good.
