A friend of mine up here at work just ordered a stag arms  model 3L. I told him I wasn't sure if he would be able to shoot 223 rem. ammo or just the 5.56 nato. the book says its a 5.56 nato chamber which leads me to think that I am right.... in order to shoot both it needs to be a wylde chamber correct?

5.56 will shoot both.

223 wylde only claims to be capable of shooting both but with greater accuracy than a 5.56 chamber.

In reality .223 Wylde is not ideal for shooting 5.56.

I ask this in another thread but havent gotten an answer. How much greater accuracy?

The reality is it's impossible to meaningfully quantify the improvement as more would depend on the ammo and the barrel/crown itself.

Though Ned Christianson did an admirable job trying to show the difference in his SWAT Magazine article on the subject a few months back.  You might want to ask about in the SWAT forum in the General Discussion area.

You can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56 weapon ......... but, you should not shoot 5.56 in a .223 only weapon.

I recently purchased a RRA Std. A4 chambered in .223 Wylde, and it would blow primers shooting 5.56.  I had to have the chamber reamed for the 5.56 to work.  It was not an ammo issue either, just not a chamber suited for 5.56.  I'm not suggesting that all Wylde chambers won't accommodate 5.56, just that mine didn't, and I certainly lost all the benefits of the wylde chamber when it was reamed, but i didn't buy this rifle for precision, so iI wasn't a big deal for me.

Ya guy's just don't get it. Bill Wylde devoleped his chamber back in the 80's for Canadian service rifle compitition which required using 5.56 ammo the only differance between a true Wylde chamber and a 5.56 chamber is a .010 shorter leade which allow's for less bullet jump to the rifling. The Military also must account for shooting tracer's which have a longer bullet hence the longer leade or throat if you prefer that terminology. You can shoot 5.56 in a Wylde chamber. A commercial .223 chamber has an even shorter throat which can cause high chamber pressure when using 5.56 ammo. The chamber is only one of many factor's to consider when comparing barrel's.
