phantom's nice, vortex is better...

if you have a 14.7" bbl, its illegal to remove the FH while the barrel's still attached to the action.  this is because it's been pinned on.

if you have a 16" bbl, simply turn the a2 off counterclockwise (looking down the barrel from the front).  then place the new crush washer on and thread the new phantom on.

if the phantom has no port on the bottom (some model's don't) then keep on loosening and tightening the phantom down until the side without the ports is on the bottom of the barrel.

if its pinned on, i recommend you send the barrel to ADCO FIREARMS to remove and re-pin a new FH

In all honesty I like the look of the standard A2 flash hider best of all. The Phantom style would be the next best and it provides good flash suppression which I could care less about. The Vortex is ugly IMHO and makes a weird ping sound when you shoot it.

i have a 16"  bbl so im good there.

any insight on either the 4 port or 5 port phantom?

thanks

I like all the Phantom styles.  The Vortex is supposed to the best at what it does.   And maybe it's just my OCD, but I purposely don't look at my Vortex too often.    It's non-linear lines and lack of consistent timing drive me crazy.  I like things straight and true when looking down a barrel.  I'll probably replace it soon for that reason.  We all have our little quirks.

just an adjustable wrench.  you can wrap the FH in some electrical tpe as to not scratch it.

whichever has no downward facing port... i believe the 5c2.  that will offer some brake characteristics as well.

I would only replace bird cage A2 with a Phantom if the Barrel is 14.5

Dont add one to a 16inch barrel

but hey its your call

I have the OLD 4 slot phantom on my back up LMT/Bushy M4

And a closed bottom Phantom on my go to LMT M4

the closed bottom helps when shooting prone

Phantoms are nice.  They work a lot better than the A2 FH, but there are other options that work better still, like the vortex.  Personally, I like the 5C2 the best.  As far as installation all you have to do is take a wrench and remove the old one and time the new one on with a crush or peel washer.  There is nothing wrong with a phantom on a 16" barrel, though it will add a small amount of length.

Timing of the flash hider is important. If you over tighten the flash hider it could affect accuracy. How much I personally do not know. I was told by an old armorer that 5 ft.# of torque is all you need. If I am wrong guys please correct me.

Heres my Thought

A 16inch barrel carbine is kinda long as is
let alone add a longer FH like phantom

But thats just my thinking

I dont even like my 14.5 that weel and would rather go 10.5 or 12.5
