Has anybody ever tried to build a KX3 out of titanium or inconel or ?

It would seem to me that it would drastically reduce the weight which IMO is the biggest downfall of it.  I have a 10.5" SBR with an old style KX3 and the darn thing is HEAVY.  I would guess over 12-13 ounces.  I am just thinking that if you made everything (except maybe the cone) out of some superlight metal it would be more pleasant than having to carry a darn near one pound weight on the end of the barrel.

Thoughts?

Nobody I'm aware of has done it as cost might be prohibitive.

When you say old style, do you mean the KFH?  If so, that is heavy, but my KX3 is not.  Work out and lift more weights!

The KX3 is a half assed solution to perceived problem to begin with.  As you said, its a lot of weight that does nothing more than redirect the blast.  There is no DB reduction, and any "reliability enhancement" is negligible.  And all this at the cost of weight and length to the OAL of the weapon - which you made to be "short" to begin with.

I just came out with the OPS INC M4-S, which is a better solution by a mile.  It only add 4.5" to the OAL of the barrel(measured from the bolt face), it only weighs 11oz, and offers a double digit DB reduction.  As for a reliability enhancer on a SBR - absolutely.  I've never found gas port sizes that a KX3 would and would and not work on, so what/if any measurable back pressure it does add is minimal at best.  The M4-S adds considerable back pressure, enough to where a smaller gas port can be used decreasing pressure which is a HUGE enhancement in the reliability of a SBR.  Add to that flash suppresson and masked dust signature and its even better.

The down side for the hobby shooters is it is considered a suppressor by the ATF, which means a $200 tax stamp on top of the $225 price tag. If you are serious about your weapon, its a bargain with many benefits.

I have the KFH but the weight difference between it and the newer KX3 is only 1.5 ounces.  It is still a heavy bastage to have hanging out at the very end of the rifle.  It is not so much a hard to lift heavy as it is a unbalanced type of heavy.
