Hello fellas.  I have a Colt AR-15 SP1.

I AM NOT selling it.  On the contrary, I am considering another just like it.

The one I am looking at is "Like New" but I won't see it until Wednesday.  So here are the questions:

1.  What is mine worth?  It has a very low (only four digits)  serial # - 27xx  It is in good shape but I have no real background to tell you a percent.

2.  How do I know it all matches to see if its all the married originals?

3.  What is a "Not so low" serial # in "Like New" worth?

Last one is an Opinion question -

4.  Should I spend the money on another of the same or look for a more use and abuse AR?

You'll probably have better luck in the retro forum.

Info from the AR15.com Serial Number List Article, your SP1 was made in 1965.

Here's a tacked thread in the retro forum about the SP1 Data Base.

SP1 Data Base - at the AR-15/ M-16 Retro Forum link

+1 The expert members at the AR-15/ M-16 retro forum could help you determine the condition of your rifle and the possible value.

Should you get another one just like your SP1, maybe if you just want to collect them but if you want to use it you could get something similar that's in a more average shape.

My first AR-15 was a '71 SP1 it was very accurate and I used it without any problems for a long time until I sold it at about 98%+ condition so I could get the new AR-15A2 SP2 in '84, I wished I didn't sold it.

I also have a SP1 ,There is a guy selling one at the local gunstore for $1500 ,it was at least 95% new still, didnt look like he shot it to much. I have been offered at gunshows 1200 or better in the past say maybe 4 years ago,I saw a brand new one for sale still in the box and the dealer want $2000 ,noone there bought it. Mine is in really good shape and I have shot it quite a bit over the years, but I would not sell it for anything for the reason is I know I will never get another, there used to be a section on this forum that had SP1 by date and serial number to help guys track down when they were made ,it was pretty complete but I have no Idea where that section went to.

Oops I see the guy posted the link for that SP1 section

Thanks guys.  I like shooting it.  I am starting to think that maybe I should just put it away and get a shooter.

It wouldn't hurt the Colt to just clean and oil it and set it in the safe.
Or build a retro and shoot that.

We have a local gun store owner that has an SP1 in basically unfired condition. It was made in the late 1960's and is very much in as new condition. He wants $2500 for the gun. I've had my eye on one for a while, but will hold out for something in great condition in the $1400 range.

My first AR was  a Sporter 1 I got in 1974. Sold it in '82 to  get money to buy an M16A1 (they were reasonably priced back then).
