I've seen the ZM Weapons System AR, as well as the Olympic Arms AR pistol.
Both companies have developed their own proprietary gas system to eliminate the buffer tube on their firearms. My question is, why hasn't anyone developed an add-on/DIY system that the average AR user could install? I've spoken to a dozen AR gunsmiths who have each told me "Yeah. I made my own system like that. I keep meaning to market it" The fact that I've heard it over and over suggests to me that yes they built one, and no, it didn't work too well. A side folder AR would be my idea of the perfect (legal) PDW. And, I guess I will end up purchasing a Robinson XCR when I have a few extra dollars. Any thoughts why this modification never caught on? A lot of work, for a less mature system, with non standard parts, to get a stock that only can fold and open to a specific length.
There just isn't that much demand for such a product as shown by the low sales of the Oly and ZM products. However, if you want one, those two companies would be happy to sell you one. |

Both ZM and Oly offer ESSENTIALLY a do-it-yourself conversion in the respect that you can purchase a complete upper receiver and plop it onto ANY lower receiver. ACE Stocks make the folding mechanism for both rifles, and they offer a much nicer and cleaner version now than what you'd get on a compete rifle.
The Oly is by far the lesser expensive of the two, and that's what I'd to for first if I were in the market. Good luck |

Para USA is coming out with a Side folder AR later this year, They are also going to sell conversion kits.
