Just want to say hello and intro myself! Hope this is a proper place to do so. This forum is HUGE!

Name is Dave, although everyone knows me as Big Dave. Just turned the big 40 last year and have been involved with shooting since I was 17. Never a real hunter, (tried archery for awhile), but I'm just to big of an animal lover for it. Have been riding cycles since I was 15 and have a neat collection of vintage 80's muscle bikes, (Interceptor, 3 CBF's and an '04 Wing). Graduated from the Pennsylvania Harrisburg Police Academy in '94, but quickly realized even though I have the tools to do the job, I didn't have the patience, (lawyers and judges).

Have continued to be involved with tactical pistols, (1911's and last year went Dark Side; 2 Tone Sig 229R in 357sig), but never messed with long guns, except for the sessions with a Rem 870 through the academy. But like many, figured it would a good idea to get a SHTF rifle just in case while I could still get one, right?? Looked real hard at the Mini 14's, but about 3 weeks ago my local gun club had a S&W range day, so since I had zero experience with an AR, tried the M&P15 they had on hand as a demo. I was thrilled with the AR platform, except for the EOTech sight on it, (I'm right handed, but left eye dominant), so were working on that.

Last Sunday I pulled the trigger, so to speak, on a NIB S&W M&P15 in 5.45x39mm. Having it shipped as I type and am quite anxious to say the least!!

Bear with me as I lurk in the shadows and absorb as much as I can and forgive my ignorance if I post what seems like a stupid question.

Be Safe!!

Big Dave

Congrats man!  Is that a .219 cal.?I saw its a 5.45x39,when I purchased my ar 4 months ago I almost walked out with an ar that shot .219 rounds. As I was almost finishing my purchase the guy said oh by the way that particular ar shoots .219 rounds.Being a noob to the whole ar scene I figured all ar`s shot .223,boy was I wrong.Anyways I put the gun back and continued my search for the 223 machine I was looking for,I found one marked 5.56 on the barrel and snatched it up,which of course means it will shoot 5.56 and .223.Im not sure if you knew all of this just making sure man!  Congrats again on the new ar!

Just to make sure, you do know you bought an AR that shoots a surplus Russian round right?...my best friend bought the same gun and I had to explain what exactly it was that he just bought (and why his 1K of XM193 would not shoot through it)...at least the local shop had the decency to exchange it for him...

anyway, Welcome to the Club..this place is like electric crack...

I appreciate the heads up on the 5.45 round, I know you guys are looking out for my best interest.

Yeah, I know what she is as far as the Russian cartridge goes. I have been researching for well over a month on this purchase. I first came acrossed a very clean Arsenal AK47 with a milled receiver, composite thumb hole stock, four 30 mags AND 1000 rnds of 7.62 for $1K. I hesitated and went back 2 days later and it was gone. I figured it was a blessing because then I found out how scarce 7.62 is getting I started looking at other options such as a Mini 14 or an AR15.

I was sorta' leaning towards the AK because I liked the .30 cal round over the .223, (no offense gang). But once I shot the S&W in the AR platform I loved it, as I mentioned at the begining of my thread. However, with the cost of .223/5.56 I was cringing at those calibers. The .308 is an awesome round, but even more $$. The 6.8SPC sounds like a promising round too, but heck, try and find any of it.

Then I read the last issue of SWAT magazine about the Smith being chambered for the 5.45x39mm, considering all the mil surplus laying around, (I know,...for now). I read up on the cartridge and it's ballistics sounded real interesting so,.... bought one and have 1000 rounds on the way. Not to mention going to a big military gun show this weekend up in Harrisburg and asked my Dad if I could borrow the wheel barrow!!!

Can't wait to get it!!!

Currently looking into scope options, but I have trouble with long guns considering I'm right handed, but left eye dominant. Was told to look into a parallex scope?? Something with some magnification, too. Maybe around 4x. It's on my shopping list.

5.45 surplus is kind of hit and miss on availability, might want to eventually consider a 5.56 upper.

Have fun ;)
