I currently own a Colt HBAR II Competition Match that I bought when the AWB was still active.  SInce the ban was active and this was considered a "Post-Ban" rifle, it does not have a threaded barrel, or any type of flash suppressor.  Now that the ban is over, is it legal to have the barrel threaded so I can add a flash suppressor to it?  If so, where would you have it done at?  I live in Arkansas about an hour away from Wilson Combat, but their site still refrences Pre and Post Ban rifles and that they "permanently" attach the muzzle brake to Post Ban rifles.

My barrel length is 16".

Any help on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

I can't say anything about AZ law, but ADCO will thread it professionally for you, if you should be able to do it.

Why dont you want it threaded and then permanently fixed? And do you know if threaded barrels are legal or not in your state? Permanently fixed doesn't mean you cant remove the break/flash hider if you want to. My NJ compliant rifle is threaded and then a pin was drilled through the break to the barrel. It would fubar the break if I removed it, but the threads and barrel remain unharmed.

So now I am thinking about just removing the Colt barrel and installing another barrel that is either already threaded, or has a flash hider.  Heard a lot of good things about the Vortex flash suppressor.  Any barrel recommendations?  My current Colt HBAR barrel doesn't have a bayonet lug, so this would give me the opportunity to get that as well.

Just sent it to ADCO (www.adcofirearms.com) and have then install it.
I just sent mine out this week to be done.
If you can have someone take the barrel off the upper, just send them the barrel
and it will cost you $71 to have it threaded.
That doesn't include the flash hider or crush washer, but you can find those
anywhere depending on what you specifically want.
If you are in Arkansas, you do not need a permanent flash hider on your Colt.
Check them out.

Here's another option- a pinned on flash suppressor which slips over the end of the barrel:

Scroll down to:
Bushmaster "Izzy" Flash Suppressor/Compensator-

They have a version for threaded barrels, and a pinned on version which comes with a taper pin. It took me about 2 weeks to get it; ordered first week in January- didn't know if the AWB was going to be reenacted Jan 20, and I didn't want to have my barrel threaded. A gunsmith installed it for $40- but it was a 4 wk wait- they said they were backed up, threading barrels. Don't know how it compares to other flash suppressors such as Smith Vortex and so on.

It was my understanding that Pre-Ban and Post Ban no longer mean anything now that the AWB expired.  If they reenact the ban, it would only apply to any rifle manufactured from that point on.  So even though I bought mine as a Post Ban rifle, it is no longer considered that and is perfectly legal to have a threaded barrel now.  Is that not accurate?

I remember when the ban ended there was alot of talk about this. What I remember reading was if it was a post ban manufactured gun the muzzle device had to be permanently attached.

I still don't have anything on mine. I know the AK guys had one of those threading kits floating around for free. You just pay to ship it to the next guy. I don't know if the same thing was available for ARs.

I'll check into those kits. I know they were around $60 back then. Do it yourself and save on the 2 way shipping of your gun. If I find one you want to go in with me on it?

This is one of the loudest flash hiders I have ever heard on an AR.   I would recommend a Phantom or a Vortex, and have ADCO install it.

The correct way to thread a barrel is on a lathe. The "Do it yourself" way is a big time No-No. You will never get it concentric to the bore, and you will not have the correct relief cuts behind the threads that some FHs require. My experience with ADCO has been A++++. It would be best to send just the barrel but, if you are not capable of that ADCO can do that for you at a price.
