| Instead of buying a gun and then modifying it, I am considering just having someone build me a custom rifle so that it's what I want without all of the extra parts laying around. Who has went down this road before and who would you recommend? |
| You should do it yourself. To have a quality company that everyone here would recommend for building a rifle may have you waiting for a long while. That is unless you buy all the parts and send them to someone that assembles AR's. At that point you have already done most of the work yourself anyway. |

Seriously, it's not that hard, if I can do it, anyone can. The beauty of building you own is that you get exactly what you want and don't have to buy a base rifle and then swap out the factory parts for the ones you want. |

Not to mention a better understanding of your weapon system. If you use quality components to begin with, it's not hard to build an AR that works just as well, if not better than a off the shelf complete. |

I went down this road before back in 2005 when the exact models that I wanted was not available, I even asked local gunsmiths and found out which the members here prefers for custom work, but I decided to do it myself since I wanted to learn certain assembly process I have not done yet in owning ARs for a long time.
The sections of the AR I wanted to learn was the barrel assembly and complete lower assembly, and it's good thing that I decided to do it myself, I managed to learn to do it with the help of the knowledge of other members here in this site and finished three builds. If you're still not sure if you want to build it yourself start with the easy build project first like the lower half and send your upper components to either ADCO Firearms or Denny's Guns-GTS, they have very good reputations here and does great custom work. Here's a build it yourself thread that helped me a lot. Assemble Your Own LOWER, UPPER, FREE FLOAT, TRIGGER, GAS BLOCK - Step by Step Instructions! - link |
|
I'll play the link game with you. After watching these two videos you'll see how easy it is.
Lower Upper I gave you the vid for LaRue's hand guard because it also shows how a standard hand guard works. You may come up with questions along the way if you decide to build one yourself. Feel free to ask any you may have. |

You can also avoid any special tools and torque specs by purchasing a complete upper featuring the barrel you want. Then the most you'll probably want to change is the handguards and thats easy. Just sell the HGs here on the EE then when you find the HG you like most companies will install their HG for free or cheap. I know SWS does this.
Then build your lower (its fun) and the rest is slip on or screw on like the PG, the rear sight and the buttstock. If theres anything special you require like match chambering, suppressor spec threading, barrel turning/fluting then leave that up to the experts but you dont really need a gunsmith to install a buttstock do you? |
