Kinda a dumb question.

I had the bolt locked back on my AR and I  set it down on the buttstock and the bolt slammed forward. I locked the bolt back again, same thing.

Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal if you set the weapon down on the buttstock in a hard manner, it should not do it if you set it down gently.  Rule of thumb, if you leave the weapon locked back, make sure to always have the safety ON!

depends on how hard you put it down.  most guns will drop the bolt or slide if you hit it hard on the butt or rear of the slide due to the inertia that you create...kinda like "sling-shotting" the slide or bolt.  when you put the gun down on the butt, you are essentially drawing the BCG rearwards a small amount and that can cause the bolt catch to release.
