is there a diffrence in handgaurd length between the m4 configuration and the normal ar configuration?

No length, but M4 handguards are "fat" and have double heat shields inside.

i think its just contour of the handguards and thats it.

so all the after market handgaurds will work on both of them?

M4 are oval shape and have double heat shields IIRC vs. the more rounded thinner shape of the standard carbine handguards and they have one heat shield.
