I have a Bushmaster XM15-A3 with a 16" barrel.
For a handguard, I should be looking for a carbine-length.... right?

Yes, a 7" Carbine Length handguard.
Unless it's a dissapator (or however it's spelled) then you would want a 12" Rifle Length. I don't think that Bushmaster has a 9" Mid Length. Edit to add other choices. I guess I can't say without a photo but you can measure what you have and compare to what I've written.
