| i have a colt 6920 and was considering options for a .22. Am I better off with a conversion unit (?spikes), dedicated upper (?spikes), or the newly announced .22 by colt or sig that seems it would be less expensive than a dedicated upper? |

Depends on the accuracy you want to get and your budget. I don't what barrel twist you have but a .22 seems to work best from a 1:12 twist. Most ARs fit between 1:7 and 1:9. The lighter ammo likes a longer twist. It your just looking for plinking fun at the range and something cheap to shoot, I think the drop in conversion would be a decent setup for you. If your looking for a serious shooter and something to yeild really tight groups a distance a dedicated upper is the right way to go. Also be warned that .22 have fouling issues with the gas chambers on ARs so a dedicated upper will prevent that as well. That said shooting good quality .22 can also keep this to a minimum. So past that it's your choice. |
| I use a CMMG drop in. Ive shot out to 50 yards and it shoots quite accurately. Have about 1500 rounds through so far with only a couple misfires due to my mistakes. As far as being messy, yes .22 is very dirty. However its nothing a good cleaning cant cure. Use good ammunition and enjoy it. Alot of rounds going down range for a fraction of the cost of .223 + practice of trigger pull, proper hold, moving and shooting = it being an excellent addition to your tools. I was in the army out of highschool and a big hinderance to me in learning was not putting rounds down range because of cost. I wish they used conversions such as .22 for CQB training so we could have done a hell alot more of much needed practice. All in my platoon thought the same way. But eh, thats uncle sam for ya. So there is my .02, low cost and highly effective practice...go with a drop in. |

Actually, .22LR would run better with 1:16 twist; that's why the dedicated uppers use 1:16 .22LR barrel blanks. 1:12 is the commonly-available AR barrel twist rate that works best (if you disregard the few very early Armalite ARs that had 1:14 barrels). FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda. Regards, Ed Mann [email protected] Bobby Bowden is doing a fine job - just leave him alone.
