The panic buying, back order silliness that has infected the AR industry got the accountant in me thinking;  Just how many AR's are built in one year?  Knowing that ATF tracks this a quick search of their webisite turned up the numbers I was looking for.

A couple caveats.  These numbers are for 2006, so they're a couple years old,  The list is by the actual corporate name of the company.  Some, many companies I did not recognize.  I only pulled the ones I knew made AR's.  Also, some of these companies may make rifles other than AR's, so the numbers may be a bit skewed.

Anyway in order, here is what I found:

Bushmaster 60838
DPMS                47466
Stag                22120
Rock River                17554
Armalite                10758
Colt                  8480
Olympic                  7334
Vulcan                  5941
Smith & Wesson  4650
Double Star  3534
Superior                  2558
Lauer                  2394
CMMG                  2161
Sabre                  1268
High Standard    557
Wilson                    514
Cav Arms                    395
Lewis                    275
Spike's                    228
Noveske                      43

              199068

Call it 200,000 a year.  I'm assuming 2007 was about the same.  Obviously 2008 will be higher.  And 2009 is anybody's guess.

Make's you wonder just how many AR's are backordered compared to a normal year's production.

The entire report is availible on the atf website.  Its about a 30 page pdf.  Sorry about the formating.  Excel doesn't seem to import into AR15.com very well.

Thanks for the research!

I was wondering how many rifles all these current backorders represent and your '06 numbers gives me some idea. That is a lot of Black Rifles hiding in closets, basements, trunks, and Aunt Bea's kitchen cabinet.

Are these numbers for complete rifles or do they include bare receivers also?

Some of those numbers look real low, like Lewis, which I am assuming is LMT, and Cav
Arms for example.

But the scarry thing it that there were 5941 Vulcans made in ONE YEAR

that is why I am assuming it is rifles reflected in those numbers. because back in the day LMT didn't sell complete guns to civies

I'm assuming it includes bare lowers, basically anything with serial number.  Some of the low numbers may be due to the company just getting started.  I don't know how long Noveske has been around, but I don't think they're all that old.  '06 may  have been their first year.

those numbers don't include stripped lowers, spike sold 1000's in 06

200,000 complete rifles isn't that much. I've only bought 1 complete rifle, the rest are builds. I'd say the actual number is probably close to 2x that.

Reread the pdf at the website.  Apparently does include recievers.  There is a section for misc firearms but that would only add a few thousand more.

All told AR's seem to be about 13% of the rifle market.

I bet it is closer to 50% in 2008/9.

Are these total production numbers or do they exclude .mil and LE rifles?

Exlude military, include LE, is my guess.  Term was "sold in commerce" or some such.  Obviously Colt sold Uncle Sam more than 8000 units in 2006 and FN wasn't even on the list.

Which would make it 700,000 to 800,000.  Don't know if the industry has that much capacity or not.  Will be interesting to track.
