Hey I am new here and I have a couple ar's. I just bought a SP1 and am not sure if it is a 1977 or 1971 year gun. The serial number is SP 170 xxx. The biggerhammer site has the dates but only have 5 numbers and mine has 6 or is it SP1 70xxx. I have the box and manual which has 11-72 on the back.
Thanks for your help

There should be a "born-on" date stamped on the barrel in the format mm/yy, near the barrel nut, under the handguards.  This applies to the barrel only, and not the complete rifle but is usually within a couple of months.

Sorry, won't work.  Colt didn't start date-stamping barrels 'til sometime in the 90's.

treadlok - according to the Black Rifle II, your Colt is likely 1971 vintage

The books lists:

1971 ........SP16001
1972.........SP19401

And once again, I offer the magic answer!

1-800-962-COLT.

You: "Can you run a serial number for me and give me a date of manufacture?"

Them: "Sure, give me a minute."

WAY more accurate than fishing around for reliable answers here, Dude.
