Newbie question? I have a bushmaster AR15 which i have been "upgrading" I was considering a new BOLT and was wondering if It is a worthy upgrade or is the factory bushmaster sufficient. I was seriously considering an LMT- the enhanced version - goes for about $155.00. If I'm going to spend the $$ i would like the very best. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, should I upgrade the Carrier and is there any advantage to an FA carrier over the SA that I have now?

You're starting to manifest Afrcom Obsession Syndrome.  Take that money and buy mags, ammo, reloading gear, range fees.  Shoot more, worry less.

Does your current bolt carrier group not work?

Unless you are having problems with your current BCG, I would just shoot it and stop worrying about it.

When it comes time to replace the bolt and/or carrier, I order mine from Noveske.  They sell very high-end shot-peened and MP-tested products.

I swear by Young's Mfg National Match BCG...... LMT and Bravo make excellent BCG's too.

I keep an extra bolt with me.   I have 3 AR's and one extra bolt in case one fails.  Two of my ARs have the original semi auto bolt (1RR, 1Stag) and they work fine.  My backup is a BCM Auto as is the one in my middy.

Yes, so far I have about 500 rounds fired, no problems.

1 Colt rifle
2 Bushmasters Car/rifle
1 LMT M4
1 bushy/LMT upper M4

I shot alot of ammo with my 2 bushmaster
Never a single problem

No advantage over SA / FA

If it runs 100% it runs

So, you feel the quality of the bushmaster is good enough and I shouldn't worry about it. I haven't seen one break down, I am not new to weapons, just AR15s. I purchased mine years ago and it collected dust in the safe. As of late our Dept authorized us to carry our own for patrol as long as we qualify with it, and use dept ammo on duty. I don't have the $$ to buy another rifle so I want this one to be as fool proof as possible. My life and someone elses could rely on it someday.

Exactly - leave out the o-ring though.  The BCM spring and black insert will be plenty of an upgrade from the stock Bushmaster (rifle spring/buffer) parts.

I have done the exact same thing to several of mine, staked the key better, and get on with the shooting.

If you can find one, it may not hurt to upgrade the bolt to a BCM bolt because it is shot-peened, proof tested and MPI'd, but the carrier should need nothing else except perhaps better staking on some and your money would be better spent elsewhere.

I was just thinking (outch! ) that you might try building a duty rifle. Use your Bushy for now and buy parts as funds become available. Before you know it you will have just what you want/need.

Like I said, just a thought.

That sorta what i was hoping to do using the bushmaster recievers and upgrade everything else. I already did the grips and stocks and mounted Comp m3. But the more I "learn" the more I'm looking at the ""mechanics"" and I would like to make it as foolproof as possible. Also I plan on putting through the numbers soon. I just ordered some PPU M855 and I'm psyched. All u guys are getting me addicted to this....

if you want a bolt just get one as a spare part.if anything will actually break it would be a bolt.
then you would have it if you needed one and would not have to wait on the mail.

crwdplsr I have a Bushmaster with over 14,000 rounds through it and the original carrier and bolt are still fine. Buy ammo and mags and shoot it.

Bushmaster - good barrels, very serviceable BCGs, forged uppers and lowers. Stake the key if necessary and a good extractor spring.  Dial it in.
