I recently purchased a 223 upper at a gun show. My question is can I use ammo labeled 5.56/223?
Or do I specifically have to look for ammo labeled 223?  All my other guns were 5.56/223 so I never had to worry about this.  If you can shoot 223 out of a 5.56 then why would anybody ever make a 223 barrel?

You cannot safely shoot 5.56 out of your new .223 upper.

.223 barrels should not fire ammo that is labeled 5.56.  There is a difference in pressures.

For better accuracy.  Longer throats in the 5.56 chamber are great for handling higher pressures, but they can reduce the accuracy.

What about the ammo that is labeled both 5.56 and 223?  Does that mean the ammo is 5.56 or 223?

I would imagine if it is marked both 5.56 & 223 than it would be 5.56, better to be safe and use it in your 5.56 ARs only.

Which ammo in particular are you referring to?

it's certainly not a stupid question and it's always better to ask then to possible have some problems.

Like sobe already said if its marked 5.56 and .223 only shoot it in a 5.56 barrel

is your barrel marked .223 or 5.56?
