How Accurate are the conversion kits? I am looking at the CMMG from Brownells and am curious to know if my 1/9 twist barrel will make for a good accurate shooter.
I realize that it wouldn't be as accurate as a actual .22, but if it's close, then I might pick one up. |

I was curious about this also last summer so I conducted a small test. The test rifles were a Colt 20" chrome lined 1:9 twist barrel, a RRA 16" 1:9 chrome moley midlength and I used a 2.5 X 10 Tasco scope. I shot all groups at 50 yards. Groups were 5 shots and were either shot prone or off a bench. The temperature was 70 degrees with light wind. All groups were measured center to center with calipers from widest two shots in group.

All the guns produced good groups which are ruined by fliers. The fliers are present with almost all groups but are more pronounced with the 1:9 twist. The Aguila is some of the best shooting ammo I've found. With Fed bulk or other ammo I'm sure the groups would be bigger. If your plinking the conversion kits have enough accuracy for shooting steel plates and CQG training. If you want to shoot small groups with a scope you'd better pony up for a dedicated upper and then the accuracy is going to be less than a good bolt gun IMHO. I hope this helps answer people question of accuracy with a conversion kit. You can see there is not much difference between Colt conversion kit and Ciener conversion kit. Ammo seems to make a greater difference in groups compared to kits. |
