| What is the advantage to having a billet upper (i.e. Larue, Vltor), as opposed to a regular one? And who else makes billet uppers besides the two mentioned? |

Thats true... But in this build I'm going for looks. I have 2 AR's that I use and abuse but this one i'd like to keep just to look pretty. Your looking for a safe queen to caress, hug and kiss and have long walks in the range with. Sorry not "just" for looks, I want it to be built of all top quality parts and of course when i take it out i want it to perform better than it looks. |
| From what I understand the functional differences between a forged lower and a billet lower are non existant. However, because the billet lowers are CNC machined the tolerences are much more consistant and tighter than forged lowers. The fit will be tighter and the overall finish will be more consistant. If you are looking for a better performing ar15, getting a billet upper or lower won't do it. But damn it looks good. |

billets are machined inside and outside. Forgings outsides are formed in the stamping mold, then machined inside.
I always thought the forging process creates stronger metal. Maybe things changed ? More machining means higher cost. I just don't see a quality advantage. |
