Please forgive my ignorance.
Is there any practical advantage to using the free-float tubes on an M4, or is it simply aesthetics? |

Quoted:
free float = increased accuracy for precision shooting M4's aren't for "precision" shooting.if you swapped out a bunch of items to make it a precision shooter, then you would consider a free float tube.an M4 does what?2-4 MOA? a precision one done up could do under a 1/2 MOA. then the free float "could" help. but they do look Nice! |

Thanks, too... I do like the look, but my M4 is pretty much for short range stuff (< 200 yards) and I'm not an expert shot –– just adequate. |

If you have the tools and the know-how, I see no MAJOR disadvantage in going with a FF. The only disadvantage I can think of is that it's more difficult to clean out any crud that gets under your HG (FF). Free floats are usually more stable and enhance accuracy, as well as consistency. Of 5 AR uppers I own, 4 of them are FF.
