Hi, I am new here but not new to AR's. I am an officer of 16 years. I recently purchased a Colt M4 at a gun show. It measures 16 inches with the flash supressor. I read somewhere that the suppressor is soldered on and this counts as part of the barrel. Is this true or do I need to call ATF. I bought this at a gun show. I used to have a Bushmaster Car-15 with 11.5 inch barrel and 5.5 inch flash hider i know it was true for that  but this current one says LE only M-4. Any help is appreciated.

My understanding is if it is fixed to the barrel, it is good to go.

EDIT: And 16" of course.

If your muzzle device is either pinned or silver soldered you are fine.

If your barrel did not have a permanently attached muzzle device, it would still be considered a 14.5" barrel which would be illegal to own without a tax stamp.

Since your flash hider adds at least 1.5" to your barrel, and it can"t be removed, it is now considered part of the barrel and it meets the minimum length requirement.

First how are you measuring the barrel.  Are you dropping a rod down the bore to the bolt per the BATF?

Colt makes the 6920 which has a 16" barrel plus a flash supressor, with the rod measuring you should get just over 17"

Their other M4 model the 6921 has a 14.5" barrel with it's A2 flash supressor in place it should measure just under 16" with the rod method.  This rifle requires a $200 tax stamp or a new muzzle device permanently attached to bring  the barrel up to non-NFA status.

For the flash supressor to be considered part of the barrel it must be permanently attached.  1100 degree Silver Solder is one method that has been approved of in the past, most blind pin the muzzle device then spot weld over the pin.

It sounds like you have a 14.5 barrel what I would do is Call Colt with the s# they can tell you all about the build if is is still original.
If you can see a crush washed then it is screwed on. I think pinning the brake is the proper way to make it part of your barrel.

What exactly does the roll mark on the side of it say?
