No tricks really. Just use a screwdriver that fits well and muscle it off. Having someone else hold the rifle steady can help.

do they come from the "factory" locktite'd or something?  I dont have a vice but think that might be what it takes.

Well, its not really locktite, but there is a drop of something on the screw. Like I said, its not locktite, or at least it shouldnt be.

I totally understand. I tried unscrewing my castle nut on my Bushmaster "Patrolman" and I tell you I had to use a shortened fence poll for leverage on the wrench and some decent caveman muscle power.

I had the same problem a while back –– I finally squirted some Kroil oil around the screw and let it sit for few hours. Then I heated up the screw area with a hair dryer until it was almost hot to the touch, got a good fitting screwdriver and it came out pretty easy. Prior to that I had just about busted a gut trying to get that damn thing out.

I saw a video in you tube a few months back on how to do it while looking for AR stuff, but you can check in "Build it yourself " thread.

Holy cow, I had no idea they were that tight. I bought a complete Bushmaster lower at a show about 3 years ago, and the screw came right out. It was easy.

Is this a recent thing?

Take the upper off. Make sure you do not lose the take down pin and spring and the buffer retainer and spring also.

looking at the schematics of the bushmaster it looks like the buffer pad maybe?
