I am trying to decide what barrel length would be right for my first AR build and have no real experience with this type of rifle. For an average shooter would the 18" offer any real benefit over a 16"? I want this thing to be accurate but very long range shots are unlikely..

Personally, I get the best accuracy out of my 20-inch H-Bar, although I have talked with individuals who have an 18-inch, and they have claimed superb accuracy.

What I have concluded though, is that I enjoy shooting my 16-inch carbine more than the rifle, and it is still plenty accurate for all of my needs.

I've shot a gang of rifles in my time and my all time favorite is now my 16" heavy barrel midlength. I never thought anything would pass the M1A but it did.

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy. Longer sight radius makes it easier to shoot accurately

I would go with a 16" midlength. It's a good all around length, there's no NFA crap to worry about, and the middy is smoother and has a longer sight radius.

Get nothing longer than a 16" for a first rifle.  You gain nothing in accuracy for shots that are not very long range.

Beyond what distance would it be advisable to go from a 16" to an 18" barrel?  400 yds?

I am currently trying to make the same decision.  The majority of my shooting will be less than 300 yds.  Is the 16" more than adequate?
