I'm still clueless about the whole headspace thing. When I bought my AR, and soon after discovered this site, I kept reading things about "having a second bolt" for backup. So I picked one up on a trip to the gun shop, oiled it up, wrapped in plastic and put it into my CAA pistol grip. It's been there untouched since.
Now I keep reading about "headspace issues". So could I drop in this new bolt if a problem occured with my original bolt. Would it be safe? What happens if a bolt is not headspaced properly?

The only 'headspace issue' that can occure is if you put a used bolt into a used barrel.

Putting a new bolt into a 'used' barrel is never an issue.

The book answer is to always check headspace when the barrel or bolt is replaced. The TM does not say 'new bolt in used barrel is okay, headspace does not need to be checked'.

Plenty of people around here don't check headspace and we don't hear about exploding ARs killing them. OTOH, if they are dead, blind, or have had their hands blown off, they aren't posting on afrcom.

Check your hometown forum for people local to you. I'd bet someone in your area will check your headspace for you in exchange for a beer.
