I've been ghosting around here for a little while and recently got a reason to join Here in South Carolina we just had a couple of tax free gun sales days and I managed to talk the wife into letting me get an AR-15. I've wanted one for a LONG time and this looked like a good time to get one Long story-short, went to the local gun store and there are at least 15 AR-15s on the rack, some new-some used. Looked at a couple of used ones, liked a Bushmaster XM-15 E2S and went to buy it when the wife says "I'd rather you get a new one." I've been in the Air Force for 21 years now so when I got home I stripped it and gave it a good visual. Everything was nice and tight, clean and lubed. I was going to take it to the range today but it rained ALL day here so I'll have to wait until next weekend. Question: Should I give the gun a cleaning before hitting the range? I ran my .22 boresnake through the barrel and wiped off all the excess oil and it looks ready to shoot but I'm (only slightly) worried about the remaining oil/preservative from the factory. Thanks in advance for any info/help. I'll try to get some pics posted when I get it to the range. |

Congrats on the AR. Price seems high, but if you are happy, that is all that matters.
For the Wolf ammo, Shoot all you want, ignore what anybody says about Wolf or any other steel cased ammo. It all goes bang! It wont hurt your AR15. Of course some ammo will give better accuracy, but if you are just plinking, go for it! Enjoy!!! Travis |

Around here AR-15s, when you can find them, are not inexpensive (that's why I was looking at used guns to start with). This particular gun was the cheapest Bushmaster the dealer had (I wanted to stick with a gun from one of the old ABCs of AR-15s, I figure they have the most experience building them). I thought I was paying a bit more than I would have 6 months ago but with all the hype I thought if I don't jump in now I might not be able to later. I am VERY pleased with the purchase and I can't wait to get to the range.
As far as the ammo goes, I usually like to reload my own. Since I'm new to the high power rifle ammo I don't know though (I have a couple of nice loads for my .45ACP that I use when I go USPSA shooting, but that hasn't happened in a while). It looks like .223 isn't too bad, the wife works at K-Mart and gets a discount so I might just stick with factory stuff. What does the forum perfer, reload or factory? |

you should clean your new rifle just as if you had gone out and shot it. AG is correct on the brass ammo for the first few mags. it may just be me (well, AG too) but break it in with some better ammo. a few mags of slow fire and to get your basic sight in should good. i've put over 1500 rounds of wolf 62gr through one of my Bushmasters and it has been perfect. another of my Bushmasters has damn near 1K of wolf 62's. i use wolf for drills and training where accuracy is not a concern. hell, i've shot ground hogs with it too. |

I'm in Sumter––-slim pickings only 2 real dealers in town that I trust (one dealer said he had a waiting list for AR-15s and the other is where I made the purchase - only other option was pawn shops and I don't trust them in this town). Went to Columbia to visit an old haunt and discovered the Wateree Arms building closed up tight (out of business? no sign for new address), I missed the gun show over there in Nov but will attend the next one in Dec. The wife wouldn't let me go gun shopping alone (smart woman, I'd have probably come home with an entire armory |
