I am considering the purchase of an M4 type AR but am unsure what brand to buy. This would be for plinking and just to have and to hold. I was thinking Colt, Oly, Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, etc.. I know there must be several topics on this subject but for some reason I have a problem getting the search feature on this forum to work well. If someone could provide a link or two to some existing topics on this I would appreciate it.
Thanks, Greg

Make sure to take Oly off that list. Other than that this is how it pretty much goes around here it seems

-If you have a lot of money get a Colt, LMT,  or Noveske (no particular order no matter what everyone says)
*Sabre Defense would also be in the top category [thanks jcrowl I forgot about that one]

-If that is too expensive then get a RRA, S&W, Stag, Bushmaster, CMMG, or Charles Daly (all are about equal it seems)

-If you have a very limited budget but still want something decent get a DPMS or Del-ton

-hit/miss company = Oly

**STAY AWAY from = Hesse/Vulcan

Everyone has different opinions, Colt, Lmt, Noweske probably top three.Bushy,RRa,Stag,Daly,S&w,Armalite all very good.Avoid Oly and Essential Arms.

I'd add in Sabre Defence as one of the top end ones.

I have only heard good things about Double Star and their price seems a little more reasonable than others.

I've also heard good things about a small maker called Superior Arms. Fit and finish seemed good when I looked at one in my local gun store. Going for about the same as a Bushy. Haven't shot one though...

Colt, LMT, Noveske, Charles Daly M4LE

the Charles Daly M4LE is the clear value leader. I do not have a CD but I have inspected one closely. I do own Colt, Noveske, and LMT and I wouldnt think twice about buying an M4LE if i was in the market for another M4

Thanks for all the responses!
I was told Sabre Defence was a good brand but didn't know much about them. I have a budget number in mind that would cover the high end manufacturers mentioned. I thought I would wait until after the first of the year and see if prices come down after the current post election buying frenzy settles down some.

I wouldn't wait if I were you since they may never come back down. At the same time though I also wouldn't pay out the ass right now either (like the used Oly plinker that was going for $1200 ). If you just take your time and do some research you can still find good deals just make sure to jump on it when you get the chance ( I missed out on a NIB S&W optics ready for $749 because I didn't know if I needed another AR ). If you have the money I would definitely jump on whichever one of the top brands that have been mentioned at the best price you can find and not look back.

Thanks Jeep.
I won't wait too long.
In your opinion, would a a Colt M4 commercial model or the LE model have more collector value down the road than the other high end brands? I considered the LE model which is legal since the sunsetting of the Crime Bill. Only thing that bugs me is the Law Enforcement Only legend on the receiver that might raise questions on down the road when Obama gets around to a permanent ban. I don't know if I want something I have to defend to people who are ignorant of the law. DvlDog mentioned it in his post. I think it would be nice to have. Or, I figured I could put a collapsable stock on the Colt M4 commercial model and have a pretty nice AR that would hold its value. Kinda looks like all of them will hold their value now. I need to look at the other brands so I have some homework to do.

I'm by no means an expert on Colt. All I know is that the 6920 seems to be EXTREMELY popular. It will most likely hold its value better than other brands in the general public but with the arfcom crowd all the top brands will hold similar value. You can't go wrong with any of the top brands though and I don't know about you but I plan on keeping all my guns so resale value doesn't mean much to me . That being said I'm sure if you post another question relating to which Colt you should buy you would get a lot of good responses from some of the guys who know more than I do. I also wouldn't worry too much about the LE stamp, at least not enough for me to pass up a good deal

I have a 6920 and the  2 of the Colt commercial model you speak of which is the MT6400c. The 6400 comes with a muzzle brake and fixed stock. You can indeed replace it with the collapsible stock. I went a step further and sold off the uppers and replaced them with Colt M4 14.5" uppers. I registered one as an SBR and permanently attached an extended flash suppressor to the other. The neat thing about the 6400c is that is has "M4 Carbine" in the roll mark, just like the military models.

jcrowl,
Great looking rifles! Thanks for posting pics. Also, Jeep and others, thanks for your responses. I appreciate the help. I'm a pistol guy and am still learning about the rifles. I have been looking at prices on the colt 6920 and have seen them anywhere from $1600 to $2000 on gunbroker. I see where dealers are bidding on other dealers' mechandise and relisting at higher prices. A local dealer in the DFW area has a bunch of them for $1899 a pop. With sales tax it would be over $2000. Inventories appear to still be a little thin right now with some of these dealers. I've got more looking to do.
