I just got my CMMG 16" Mid Length Upper in the mail and the forward handguard receiver thingy is triangular shaped when I was expecting something round.  (I'm talking about the part that sits against the rear of your front sight post and helps to keep your hanguard in place)   I ordered it w/o hanguards too.  This brings up two questions:

Are there any disadvantages to having the triangle shape instead of the round?

I'm looking into getting a FF handguard and I'd like to get rid of the hanguard cap altogether.  Can I get it cut off w/o damaging anything or disassembling the front sight base?

Standard mid-length hand guards are designed for the triangular cap, not the round. I know guys have cut theirs off, but I would recommend removing the base. Less chance of damaging anything.

Will your free float handguard install without having to remove the sight base?

Im pretty sure it will but I'd rather it be off if I'm not using and have no future plans of using it

maybe someone could suggest the safest way to cut it off??

I had the same experience with my BCM Middy and having a triangular cap instead of the oval M-4 style I am use to seeing. Paul from BCM explained that there is no "Standard" for Mid length's and other manufacturer's were going with the triangle cap (RRA and Armalite) so that is what he went with. Since most hand guards can work with triangular or oval, and with FF rails it  makes no difference as well. so No down side I can see.

As to removing it.I would not feel comfortable trying to cut it off with out damaging the FSB.
I would either pop the pins on the FSB so I could move it forward and then use a dremel cutting disk to cut it off, or just leave it on.

thanks for the advice guys.  it sounds like this is the standard for all mid-length uppers and any mid-length handguard would be desingned to fit that base.  If I end up taking it off i'll go ahead and move the front sight base first.  I haven't even zeroed the rifle yet anyways.
