I have a question. What does the forward assist do? I have asked several people and they do not know .

you tap it to ensure the bolt is fully forward and locked in the event of excess crud. It also helps while doing a silent chamber check.

I was told that it was not designed to push in a round that does not feed.  That means your gun or ammo has a problem and it would be best to fix the problem rather than making it into a potentially dangerous pressure issue.  This may not apply if your are trying to save your life but you may only have one round and it might get you!!  I was taught that the forward assist was designed so that in VietNam after you crossed a river you could pull back on the bolt a bit and let water out of the bore and then QUIETLY push the round back into the chamber.  Any confirmations on that!!  308

Amazing how many people do not read the -10 Operators Manual.

Thanks for the info.
Could you e-mail me a copy of the manual on the AR-15?

I once found the Patent description on the interweb and the device description was something like, a device to enable the silent chambering of a round of ammunition.
That meshes with what I was told by an authenticated old school S.F. Guy.

I love forward assist...for hunting.

I use it to silently chamber a round when hunting.

Now, i HATE the Brunton Bump.  I've actually amputated the Brunton Bump from an A3 flat top upper to make it "prettier"?

Once again, I like forward assist, and don't like the brass bump.

I don't think you'll see an upper like this anywhere else at the moment:
(middle one)
