When measuring OAL of a barrel, do you start at the feedramps and measure to the end of the fh?  changing fh's and the new one is a little shorter.  couldn't find it with the search feature.  thanks in advance

Barrel length is measured from the bolt face.

1. Close the bolt.
2. Drop a cleaning rod into the barrel.
3. Mark the cleaning rod at the point where the barrel ends with a piece of tape.
4. Measure the distance from the end of the cleaning rod to your mark.

You'll want to measure before you install the flash suppressor, unless you plan to pin it.  Only flash suppressors that are permanently attached can be included in the length.

so if you have an 11.5 barrel you would actually only have what about 10 - 10.5 inches of barrel sticking out of the front of the receiver?  I ask because I am trying to buy a free float rail with the correct length to be just a wee bit shorter than the start of the threads of my barrel.

Thanks
