I tried searching, and browsing through the archives until my fingers bled, but I didn't really come up with what I was looking for.
What're everyone's thoughts on XM-177 styled uppers? I found one build around a 11.5" Shaw barrel, flattop upper, and pinned/welded birdcage. I went ahead and ordered it, since they actually had it in stock, ready to ship. My main question is this: all I'm used to is 16 and 20" uppers. This is a defensive rifle, mainly to be used well within 200 yards. I figured the shorter barrel would make for a lighter rifle. Do you all think this will be a decent set-up? I know a lot depends on the ammo used, lower, BCG, etc. Thanks for any input! -Parke1 |
| Just because it's XM-177-style doesn't neccesarily make your question fodder for the Retro forum. It sounds from your description that this is a defense gun and not a retro replica. Much of the argument you'll get against such a setup is that the short barrel lowers velocity, but doesn't give you any of the size benefits of a real shorty. Unless you really like the short bbl/long flashider look, for practical purposes you'd be better off with a 16" lightweight barrel |

Well, I understand that I'll lose some velocity with the shorter barrel, but it would seem to me that within 200 yards, this won't really be that big of a deal. Right? Thanks for the replies! -Parke1 It won't. You still have an 11.5 inch barrel in there so you will be fine. I have shot my 7.5 at 200 and it shoots fine. People talk about fragmentation and stuff like that, just run a some TAP in it and it will be fine for home defense and plinking. |
