So I took my new AR to the range this past weekend to sight it in. I think I did well cause by the end of it I was hitting dead center though my question is was I really sighted 100%. I was using the 25 M found here: though the range was only 25 yards long.
The top of my front sight was just below what would be the head and I was hitting dead center. The picture of the sight (sorry for cruddy paint image) is how I understand you aim. Sorry I don't have pics of the targets but does it sound like I'm zeroed?

That is a 6 o'clock hold, which works just fine, IMO. It all depends on whether or not YOU'RE comfortable with it. Let's say the "black" at 100 yards is 6 inches across. If you hold 6 o'clock and hit dead center, you're actually hitting 3 inches higher that point-of-aim. I have some of my target rifles set up for a 6 o'clock hold, because I feel it makes for a repeatable sight picture. My SHTF/hunting rifles are set up for dead on center hold (POA=POI, or close enough).

I used a center hold. For target shooting I would normally use a 6:00 hold. My group has a little bit of vertical stringing, which is purely due to not being able to consistently find the center of the little black figure with the front sight post. Keep in mind we're talking 56 year old eyes, here, too. The one shot out to the left was a called flyer, by the way. Still getting used to the trigger. |
I know its a dumb question but i am curious?

Yes it is a target you can print on normal paper. That's the same target I was using. It's just the range itself was indoors and not very long so I had to make due with what I had.
But regarding to my original post, it seems like it's preference whether I want to go with 6 or 12 o'clock sighting, correct? |

Note that the instructions say to aim at center of target.
I think the next time I try this, I may "cheat" in deference to my old and bad eyes, and heavy-up on the horizontal "cross-hair" to see if I can get a better group without the vertical spread. If you download the target from that "bobdbob" site I posted above, the target prints on an 8-1/2 x 11 piece of paper - just set your printer driver for "scaling = none" and let 'er rip. Of course, for the guy without a printer......that's a problem. But, no fear, Christmas is coming up, right? |
