Still Standard A but being replaced by the M16A4 and more so by the M4 carbine.

Hello all!  I asked this question a while ago and never got a clear answer.  So my questions again are;

Is it still the standard infantry rifle of the U.S. Military?

Is it even still produced by Colt or FN?

Did the M-4 or M-16A4 replace it in various branches of service or MOS?

Thank you in advance people
Pete

1) Produced by FN

2) Not the standard INFANTRY rifle of the Army (that would be the M4), however it is very common for support troops to be carrying M16A2s...

The A4 is primarily a Marine Corps weapon, although they are found in some parts of the Army.

The Air Force is the last branch to issue them as a primary weapon.

Army is still issuing A2s as a primary weapon to everybody but combat arms (and combat-arms-ish, eg MPs) units...

Ok.  That is what I kinda figured.  So no Combat Troops in the U.S. ARMY are issued them.  Only M-4's and some A4's.  Marines get A4's only?

And the Reserve unit I am trying to go to has A2s.  Told that when I talked to the Chief about it.

I may be alone, but I still love the A2 style rifle.. the A4 and M4 are great, but I still like the old A2, its what I saw growing up I guess and my 1st A6 back in 93 was  an A2 style Colt

I am with you Shawn.
My first (and only) AR is a 20" A2.
I personally consider it to be the pinnacle of the system.
YMMV

it is still a good weapon. The only thing I would change would be the same stock but the A1 buttstock length..  I have 8 AR15s and I have to say the A2 is still my favorite.  you can slap on a KAC M5 RAS and a surefire M951 light and an AOCG and it makes a nice package

hey and I like the A2 sight

Right now the M16A4 is mainly being issued to Combat arms MOS's in the Marine Corps. Everyone else is still getting the A2. Now they are issuing M4's to Aircrew, Tanks, Tracks and a few odds and end MOS's. The Marine Corps is a firm believer in Killing with accuracy from as far out as possible, so they truly believe in the full size M16 instead of the M4. There is talk of replacing the M9 Beretta for SNCOs and Officers with M4's as they have come to find out that the 9mm is pretty useless against any kind of body armor. We shall see.

I kinda think the A2 added uneeded weight.

US Army: All M4s - closest thing to an A4 is the AMU SDMR....

USMC: Mostly A4s, some M4s....

Support (all services): A2s.

There are a number of regular M16A4s in the Army.  The first large batch that was made by Colt went to the Army.

M16A2 is the official "sit in the armory" rifle of the USCG.  We never use ours  except to qualify, and they're a bitch to use with body armor,  a drysuit, life jacket, and SAR vest adding like 6" bulk to you.

Some of our tactical ninjas play with M4's though.

Are they still produced for the U.S. Military currently?

I remember carrying the M16A1 in basic, then the M16A2 in active and reserve duty and finally, carrying the M4 in Iraq. What a strange journey.

Convict27, you would be correct about the M4/M9 switch.  My unit still currently issues M16A2s for Sgt and below while all SNCOs and officers get the M9.  Just last month we got in our first shipment of M4s to replace the M9s, and once they all get here we'll get issued a real weapon...

Almost.

The A4 was going to replace the A2 in the units that weren't airborne, air assault, etc.  For a few years INFANTRY in mechanised units (like the 3rd ID (Mech) guys that were issued them) were being issued primarily the A4 with the M4 going to a few personnel.  Then sometime around '05, '06 the Army changed it's mind and started issuing the M4 to everybody.
Most of the support units that already had A4s kept them, and any new rifles (not the M4 Carbine) being purchased and issued will be the A4.  Even Basic Training and OSUT units are using the A4.  The A2s that are still in use are older and not newly purchased.
