I would have to say Noveske, but I'm an elitist prick. If you want an AR just for plinking you could definitely get away with something less expensive and spend the money you save on ammo.

Im very happy with my Bushmaster. Having said that, knowing what i know now I couldve built one just as good for less or a much better one for the same money. If you are new to ARs dont let building frighten you as it did me. There is alot of free info on this site that will walk you step by step through the process. You could maybe even go to your hometown forum and hook up with someone local to help you. There are some "little tricks" Ive found that made my second build much faster and easier.

Good luck and welcome!

1) LMT
2) COLT
3) NOVESKE

You cannot go wrong with any of those choices.  I hear really good things about Sabre Defense AR's as well, but have never handled one.  They are fine looking gunus and everyone who owns one, swears by them on here...

I think of it this way........

When someone mentions a Civil War pistol, I think of a COLT 1860 revolver.

When someone mentions a cowboy pistol, I think of a COLT Peacemaker.

When someone mentions a G.I. Auto Pistol, I think of a COLT M1911/1911A1.

When someone mentions a modern U.S.G.I. Assault Weapon, I think of a COLT M16 (and it's variants).

Then, I can remember when the Clinton Reign of Terror was upon us.........COLT ARs sold faster and were at a premium vs. the "other" brands.

Think about your resale and collector value.

IF I was buying only one...........it would be COLT.

What you buy, is up to you.

Aloha, Mark

If you are using it just for recreation and plinking at the range, Bushmaster will serve you well.

As for which model, it depends on what you want, I am personally interested in the M4 types. Just look at their website and seen what looks good and what will best fit you.

Depends on your money situation.  If money isnt a problem then i would say COLT.  Colt= High quality, High resale, True MIL SPEC (for those who get there jollies off to that term).  If you wanna save some money and just get into black rifles I would recommend RRA or hell even the new Spikes stuff is nice.  DONT wast your time and money with Bushmaster

well im the cheap redheaded stepchild in this thread

I say stag, at least $300 cheaper and almost as good.  100% reliable, accurate, uhh what else is there?  The only thing you get with colt/lmt/novesky is perfection, a little better accuracy, and insurance (MPI tested, ect)  If your not putting your life on the line with it, I wouldn't buy the top notch, Its like getting a ferrari to drag race when you could build an eagle talon that runs the same 1/4 times.  Buy all means if you have the coin go for it, but I'm assuming your like most of us and don't have $1100 that you dont know what to do with.  Just my $.02

I agree that RRA is a good value but I beg to differ about Bushmaster.  I have a Bushmaster and it is accurate and quality and fit is great.  I've read about other Bushmaster owners here that enjoys their AR-15s also and they would also recommend them as a good brand.  Obviously if you can afford paying the green stamps, buy Colt, LMT, Noveske, etc.  But Bushmaster shouldn't be counted out as a affordable and quality manufacturer.

Hello and welcome aboard.
Lately I have been well pleased with Rock River Arms Products and have been recommending them alot. True "Mil spec" includes features like burst/full auto capabilities. That's out of the question for us civilians. Mil spec -ish or Mil spec materials is definitely do-able though. Even better stuff is available like Noveske,LMT and others. It's up to you to define your intended usage then pick your personal spec accordingly.
Colts have a nice reputation for resale value but I wont buy any more  of them because their lowers use non industry standard pins and fire control components.
Believe me the Colt fans will become enraged when I tell you Stag/RRA/Bushmaster/CMMG/Oly etc. lowers are FCG are closer to the military specs than Colts civilian offerings. But that is a incontestable fact. also don't get to wrapped around the axle about MP tested carbine bolts. What it really means is that the bolt wasn't cracked at the time of testing. not that it wont fail at some point in time.
another way to look at it is all the failed m4 carbine bolts that our army has experienced were all MP tested at the factory of the exclusive contract holder.
So don't let that be a deal breaker for you.  Good luck, have fun and enjoy your new hobby.

Affordable, reliable plinker = Stag

High quality, yet still affordable = BCM upper and BCG on a lower of your choice

Money doesn't matter = Noveske

Just buy a Del-Ton Kit & A CMMG lower receiver. It will educate you on the workings of the weapon, and you can say that you built it.

Define your usage. Then research the heck out of a manufacturer that comes closest to meeting your needs at a price you are willing to pay.

I am very pleased with my new Bushmaster. It shoots just as accurately as my Colt at 100 yrds, even though the Colt has a 20" barrel vs the 16" barrel on the Bushy. You can buy a thousand round case of ammo, and a decent sling, with the money you saved in the price difference.
I admit, the Bushy will not have the resale value that the Colt will in 10 years, but I will venture to say that your purchase price versus the resale price, will be in the same percentage as with a Colt. Having said that, I have had my Colt for ~20 years and never once thought about selling it, and expect that I will never sell the Bushy either.
I do not buy guns as an investment, I buy them to shoot.
