To remove and install handguards easily, I hold back the delta ring by gouching gouging something in between the ring and nut to slide the halves off and on easily.  I have scratched it up quite a bit doing this but I don't care (the delta ring and the nut or whatever under it).

This won't affect the barrel whatsoever will it?

Thanks.

Dont know what "gouching" is, but your barrel will be ok .

ETA - You should be able to use your hands to pull/push down the d ring.

Gouching?

Separate the upper and lower, this makes it easier to grab the delta ring. You won't "scratch it up" using just your hands.

But it is much easier this way, and like I said I don't care if it gets scratched up, as long as I am not putting any stress on the barrel I guess.  I don't know HOW that would happen, I was just curious about it.

Thank you.

Grouching is a felony in Florida.

Oops, gouging.

Sorry my bad.

A second pair of hands will help with the scratching from whatever tool you're using. If it's just you, use your strong arm hand to hold down the delta ring while your weak hand pulls out one half of the handguard at a time. Yes, it's very hard.

Well I can do it by myself with just hands but it is just so much easier by gouging in a screwdriver or something into it, hehe.

My only concern was, will it affect the barrel in any way?  I don't see how it would?

You can get a hand guard removal tool for about 12 bucks.

He's from the Pampas of Argentina.

Or the Marx brother with the fake looking moustache.

I have trouble separating these two concepts.

For future reference - cut a ring out of a bicycle inner tube and put that ring on your delta ring. It makes it really easy to pull back. I just leave mine on the rifle - it looks cool!

Most of the time I do the "strong hand push down, weak hand pop in/out half a handguard" method by myself.  Sure, it takes some grunting and swearing, but as was said in a similar delta-ring thread recently, don't be a girlie-man.

Like most activities, this one is more more enjoyable with my wife.  My main concern is keeping either one of us from hovering over the muzzle during this procedure, which you could compare to two monkeys screwing a football.

I'm too darn cheap to kick down the ~$15+S&H for a delta ring tool that I'll use 1x-2x/year.    I just don't switch out HG/rails that often, and with or without a helper, it's not really too bad.

If I was ever tempted to use my teeth, I'd definitely kick down the $20.

Seems like I can do it fresh in one shot right off the bat, bottom first then top.  Just put the buttstock on my thigh and go for it.  If I'm fiddling around with it for a bit, I seem to loose all strength do get the suckers off.  Of course if my g/f or friend is over at the house, its a piece o cake.
