What are the advantages/disadvantages to having a flat top rather than a carry handle?

I think a flat top is better for optics.

All advantage no disadvantage.

Advantage is in the optics department.  And if you like the carry handle then get a flat top and buy a detachable carry handle.

Carry handle receivers would only be desirible to me if i was building an ar that looked like and original m16

Considering that you can put a handle on a flat-top, I'd say it's pointless to go with a fixed carry handle AR15.

By looking at what people buy and what sells here, 95% of AR15.com agrees with me.

Don't limit yourself.

I don't disagree, but I know guys who run DCM rifles (competition iron sights only) and they swear that the carry handle with either A1 or A2 (depending on the guy) competition iron sights (I think the MOA clicks are different on competition irons) is the ONLY way to go.

Personally, I don't know why people buy A2s when they can have a flat top with a removable carry handle.

So do I take my $300 and turn my gun into a flat top and spend the rest on some ammo or mags and or just spend it all on ammo and mags? dont want to buy a complete upper though.

No need to buy a complete upper when all you have to do is swap the receivers. Flat tops average about $95-$105. Just make sure you know what type of barrel extension you currently have.
