Which buffer is needed for a midlength upper?    Will a standard A2 config work?

Standard A2 will work if using the A2 fixed stock.

buffer is independent of gas system.  It depends on the stock you have.

rifle tubes = standard/rifle buffers
carbine tube = carbine buffer.

They should make midlenth fixed stocks - perfect fit

There is no connection between the gas system length and the buffer / stock length.  A carbine buffer tube is to be used with short or collapsible stocks.  An A2 buffer is to be used with a full length A2 stock.  So yes if you want to use an A2 it will work fine.
