Im thinking about getting buffer for me m4 (16" barrel) cmmg
if i get a buffer thats 7 ounces will it cause any problems
what advantages will it have .
im looking for quicker follow up shots and need to know the whole story of what changing from a carbine buffer to a very heavy buffer will do
thanks

I think you want a lighter buffer if you want quicker shots...  More weight being thrown around will take longer...

Someone please correct me if I am wrong...

Heavy buffers slow down the cycle and lighten the recoil.

A heavier buffer will do what you want.  It will slow the action and keep the recoil and muzzle rise down in turn allowing for faster follow up shots.  Slowing the action will not slow your shooting as you can't shoot faster than the action can cycle.

Heavy buffers slow cyclic rate

Hydralic buffers slow and smooth out the recoil even more, but can sometime effect the bolt hold open

Lighter buffers will increase cyclic rate meaning faster lock time and quicker shots but more recoil, muzzle rise, and slower target re-aquisition.

Lighter buffers also will increase wear on the bolt and bolt carrier, since they are moving faster and hitting with more force.

will the heavier buffer help extractor life and reliablility over all. or could it cause short stroking?
thanks

I think anything that increases dwelltime helps on extraction.  A heavy buffer COULD produce cycling problems with weak ammo.  You have to try it and find out.  I have a 14.5 inch CMMG with XP chrome silicone buffer spring and an extra heavy buffer.  It is the smoothest shooting AR I have ever felt, and no problems with Wolf, YMMV.

For everyone using heavy buffers: Just wondering how much weight everyone prefers???

Well when i made this thread i was worried about the weight too..
now that i have my Spikes tactical.  7.0 ouncer in mine and i like it alot. its worlds better than the carbine buffer. much less recoil and the gun operates much smoothing . you can feel the difference

Mine will weight 6.4oz. Do you have any problems with cycling wolf ammo?

I run the DPMS Counterweight buffers in all my car-beans.

I've got an H3 buffer and I shoot Wolf ammo all the time.  No problems in sub zero temps either.  Bolt always locks back and cycles fine.  Stag 2H and semi carrier.  David
