Just curious as what most of you think the first "upgrade" usually is to improve the reliability, at least in theory, to an AR15 is or should be. For the record, I've owned multiple AR15 rifles and have put thousands and thousands of rounds down range without a stitch of trouble in any of my previous rifles (there have been 4 of them). My current (and most perfect for me, IMO) AR15 is a Colt MT6700 that has been "corrected". The barrel has turned from HBAR to the govt profile and a flash hider has been installed by KKF. I also installed an ACOG TA31. All else is factory and I can shoot the hairs off an gnats ass at 200 yards (figuratively speaking, of course). I'm not big on putting a lot of extra BS on a rifle just for tacti-coolio looks, especially if it isnt broke or if the rifle is already comfortable. I use CLP only, 'cept whenI remove the copper from my barrel then I use Barnes. I also carry an extra extractor and ejector w/ pins and springs in my buttstock. I had a national guard armorer tell me once upon a time that the extractor is the most likely thing the "break" on an M16, but he didnt think it would be much of an issue for the semi-auto AR15. I'm just curious as to what most think the biggest "quick fix" is to taking the exta step towards lessening the chance of stoppage. |

1 thing that pops into my head is the BCM extractor upgrade kit: HD spring, black insert and o-ring. Both my 16" mid-length and my wife's 20" rifle have these installed. Under $5 www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-Extractor-Spring-Uprade-Kit-p/bcm%20extractor%20spring%20upgrade.htm I'm a believer that you can't have too much extractor tension in an AR series weapon. BSW |

+1 BCM Extractor spring upgrade kit. I use it only on my carbine gas system AR also with M16 auto bolt carrier, H buffer, and PMAGs/ USGI mags with Magpul Gen 3 followers. My midlength and rifle gas system ARs only gets the black extractor insert and O-rings and same mags as my carbine. The bolt carriers' gas key should be properly staked, carbine buffer tube castle nut should also be staked, and thread lockers should be used on threaded parts (except barrel nut and adjustable parts). |
Not really what I would generally consider an "upgrade" ... but it's certainly a good idea to have a backup, nontheless. I also think this tacked thread - What Parts Break in a Carbine Course? - has some really good ideas as well. |
