In the Army I was first introduced to the M16A2 in the spring of 1987.
I’ve been wanting a plain 20” version AR15 for quite some time. Having been issued an M16A2, a clone of that rifle would have been nice. But since I had the majority of the parts needed for an A4 version rifle, I compromised and went that route with my build.
Looking through some of my pictures from the military, I came upon this photo from 1988. The photo is of a buddy of mine in Hohenfels, Germany during a unit ARTEP. We were deemed “NBC” casualties and took that opportunity to have a smoke. The rifle to the left of the photo was mine and the one I set out to imitate.
I decided with this build to replicate that rifle by adding the “22” rack number to the butt stock, and the weapon SN to the top of the stock just aft of the CH. Some very simple additions to an other wise basic rifle. But boy, looking at this thing this way sure brings back memories.

Very nice and a very cool idea!
You'll probably stumble across an A2 upper for a reasonable price some day and be VERY tempted to swap it out.
