Howdy.  New member.

I got my first AR15 a bit ago and it's a new favorite.  It's a post-ban Eagle Arms Armalite.  I sent of the trigger group to Wm Springfield for the 3-lb treatment.

The only other thing I don't like is the barrel is so heavy.  It's a 20" H-bar without a flash hider.  I'd like to lighten it up for balance and weight savings-I hike and plink while hiking.  How much weight would fluting take off?  As much as taking off a few inches?  I must get the bbl threaded too.  Who does the work?  I'd have searched more but search is tough without buying a membership....

Go with ADCO.

But PLEASE read this BEFORE shipping your upper out.

You'll probably want a GOVERNMENT profile, which will really lighten up your H-BAR.  Fluting your barrel will not do much to take off weight.

Have you considered replacing the barrel?

        You can flute and shorten.
You can have the barrel re-contoured (turned down)re-finshed and threaded
You can just replace the barrel and sell the old one
I vote that you just buy the type of upper that you want , then you can keep the old upper for shooting matches where the h-bar is really what you want or sell off the old upper to recover funds.
Consider that it is usually easier to sell a complete upper than parts

Sounds like the way I got into AR's
H-bar,carbines , then a pencil 20" (my favorite) for most use and a RRNM (h-bar) for matches.

+1

ADCO’s barrel service knocked my 20” HBAR from 3.3 lbs, down to 1.74 lbs after re-profiling to the A2 gov profile under the hand guards.

My M16A4 clone balances now right at the slip ring.

I had the same problem earlier this year, I had a Bushy A3 20" HBar and I used it for hiking and plinking (while I hiked). I ended up selling the gun, and ordering a 20" gov't profile A2 in a 1:7 twist, but Bushmaster took FOREVER to build it and ship it to the dealer, so like I woke up one morning and said "screw this shit, I'm going to get a carbine!" went to the gun store that day and now I have a 16" M4, which I use for hiking and plinking A little impulsive, but whatever.

I still wish I had a 20" though, they have a better sight radius. You can get the barrel reprofiled and threaded, but I would just buy a different one. If you want to reprofile and thread, theres a shop in Flordia called Kurts Kustom Firearms, where I was debating sending my A3 20" to, he seems to be a good gunsmith.
