| I have a mega lower I won in a raffle. Are they mil-spec or commercial? I'm about to order a stock. Thanks. |
neither. [ETA 3:45 pm CDT - by that I mean the stripped reciever itself doesn't dictate your stock choice. The reciever extension/buffer tube does] I am guessing you have a stripped lower in which case it would not have a reciever extension installed. The OD of the reciever extension is what dictates your stock choice. Get the "Mil-Spec" reciever extension only because there are more stock options availble for that sized reciever extension than the slightly larger "commercial" size. ETA: MEGA doesn't make reciever extensions, so if it does have one on it when you get it, it was added by someone else and your gonna have to measure for fit. |

Than you have every option availble to you at this point. The least expensive route is to purchase a kit that includes stock, reciever extension, reciever end-plate and castle nut [ETA: and will also include your buffer weight and buffer spring. If you are planning on going with a 16" barrel and mid-length gas system a standard buffer weight will work fine - if 14.5" carbine length gas system, than consider paying the $4 extra and upgrade to the "H" buffer weight]. You can choose to go with commercial or mil-spec as the threaded end (the part that screws into the reciever) is identical, only the OD (outer diameter) of the tube itself is slightly larger on the commercial tube and stocks. I have used PKfirearms, global-tactical, rainierarms, brownells and others, and each is good. Denny over at global-tactical is my go-to guy right now. Magpul's CTR is my favorite stock, and has a pretty healthy following. They have recently come out with their MOE, which is the same basic design, but is lacking the lock, and is about two-thirds the price. If you want to save some $ on shipping, go ahead and order your lower parts kit at the same time as your stock. You will save $7-9 on shipping that way (only one shipping charge vs. two). Of course, remember that everytime you order anything from anybody, add at least 1 standard P-Mag in the order. At $14, you can't go wrong. You should have at least six mags on hand (preferably a dozen) for each AR. You don't want to be caught in the same situation we were back in '94, should normal capacity mags be banned again. [ETA: stay with reputable brands for your LPK and reciever extension - RRA, CMT, Bushy, Stag and the like - alot of people will say, "parts is parts." Maybe they're right, but to save $10 or $15 the potential hassle and liklihood of someting being out of spec is too great for me. Use your best judgement.] |
| A side note for you... Including the sites mentioned above, you may also want to check out adco firearms for parts as well, their CTR stock is $97 (you can find it cheaper at other sites, but have to look at shipping costs also). But the big thing is they have a flat rate shipping fee of $4, and it's really fast... It took 3 days from when the order was placed until I received it and it was shipped all the way accross the country. I don't know how they can afford to only charge $4 for shipping. When I received the box it had the shipping cost stamped on it, and it cost them more than 4 times what they charged me for shipping. So from my personal experience they are very, very good to deal with. |
Sweet! I have mine with a midlength Armalite barrel w/ m4 style cuts, a MI mid 2 piece free float rail, and standard M4 stock. I need to update some pics... |
