Which AR-15 would you recommend as a, in safe, backup under 1K? I have spare parts, for my one AR, but would like an AR sitting in the safe just in case my one AR breaks to the extent that it has to go to a gunsmith. At my age and income I do not want another expensive AR. I'll most likely be dead before I have to really use the one I have.

So do you want inexpensive or do you want reliable? They're mutually exclusive.

I used to drink too much of the Kool Aid on the site here and I "HAD" what many refer to as a KISS Carbine.  Just a stock AR-15 with an A1 upper.  The logic is that it is as simple as things get and it would be as fail proof as any AR-15 can get plus it is cheap.

Myself, I took that carbine and added rails and I collapsible stock and an ACOG and what was my KISS has become more of a mid-range carbine for me and if I need short range I can pull off the ACOG.

My primary "go-to" AR-15 is an M4A3 and it really is loaded with irons, EoTech, Surefire, forward grip, rlightning link w/ select fire kit.

For $1000, you can have an excellent second AR-15 but the reality is any AR-15 would make a good parts donor or backup!

For 1K he can have a dammed reliable AR-15!  My primary AR-15 is worth upwards of $10,000 while my backup is perhaps worth $1000 without the ACOG.  I think that is expensive vs non-expensive

They're not always mutually exclusive. You can get a complete LMT rifle with iron sights for right around $1000. You could also get a complete RRA rifle for a bit under $1000. There are also a ton of other reputable companies who make reliable uppers for between $500 and $700. You could buy one of these and then easily build a lower with a CTR stock for around $250.

There are alot of options in your price range that will be reliable.

My friends AR is a Model 1 Sales upper with a bushmaster lower, For just a KISS Carbine for backup his was around 800 after all said and done. Its had 3k rounds downrange so far and hasnt had 1 problem at all. That is for a flat top with a removable carry handle. And for a few bucks more you could get a cheap rail setup put on it Something like an DD Omega 7.0 which is a great rail, and you would be ready to swap your lights/lasers/ optics from your main to your backup, or just keep it stock.

Just a suggestion.

For around $1K, I'd say go ahead get something like a CMMG or LMT rifle, and keep it stock, if you want a "backup" rifle.  Something that you can easily transfer your gear over and on to.

How is your primary set up?  Optic + BUIS?  Rails?

I keep two carbines that are set up almost identically for the similar reasons, having figured out a setup that will work in 95% of all situations, and that I am comfortable and familiar with.

You can get a basic ADS, Stag, CMMG, or S&W for under a grand easily.

All will be reliable and will serve you well.

I'd get a M4 flat-top setup a  collapsible  stock.

Stag Arms M4 16" Flat top upper with Stag BCG and charging handle with Larue QD iron sight = $565
Stag Lower = $120
Stag lower parts kit =$70
Stag 6 Position M4 stock = $80 or Stag kit with Magpul CTR = $140

Done at $835 - $900 depending on stock choice.

I'd love a BCM 16" MidLength at $720 with Larue QD sight, but it's never instock.
I'd also love a LMT in 14.5" with a YHM phantom flash hider and Larue QD sight, but it's $760, almost $200 more than the Stag.

stag kit from ar 15 sales -------------$633
Grand total for an EBR-----------------$753

Seeing the face of liberals when they find out you "have one of THOSE?"
----Priceless.

but yea just add $20 for the lower ffl transfer and 10 for shipping and your still under 800.  Thats what i did - great rifle.

I have a straight forward all LMT M4 which is set up as simple as possible. No frills and super reliable as a back up to my "heavier" rifles.

My Colt LE6920 is my first line carbine.  It‘s mildly accessorized (Troy BUIS, Knight’s RAS with an Aimpoint with ARMS mount).

As back-up I have my 11.5" Colt SBR and my KISS Bushmaster/RRA (Bushmaster lower & RRA 15" upper with a permanently attached FH) M4 carbine.  It has a Vltor stock, Duckbill grip and Colt M4 hand guards and Colt carry handle.

I have approx. $800.00 in my KISS Bushmaster/RRA M4 carbine.
